Naruse/Stein Piano and Violin Duo Perform Beethoven Violin Sonatas

Dean Stein and Chiharu Naruse, accomplished violin/piano duo, teach at Bates College where they have succeeded in mastering and performing all ten of Beethoven's violin sonatas. Their Farmington concert will include Violin Sonata #1, #5 and #9, immortalized by Tolstoy's dark novella 'The Kreutzer Sonata.' AIWM is an affiliate of the University of Maine at Farmington.

Silent Sidekicks is a nonprofit organization that provides information and education about animal-assisted therapy/activities and the services of trained volunteer handler-animal teams to communities. Their mission is to enrich people's lives and promote health and happiness through positive experiences with animals. They accomplish this by creating events and activities in the community that promote the awareness of the benefits of the human-animal Bond. We recruit, train and match Silent Sidekick teams with health care facilities, hospitals, schools and libraries that would like to have animal-assisted therapy/activity programs. *This event will be an interactive presentation on what Silent Sidekicks does as an organization and potential interaction with a furry, four-legged friend.

George Mitchell Peace Scholarship to Ireland Info/Advising Session

The prestigious George J. Mitchell Peace Scholarship honors the Northern Ireland peace accord brokered by Senator Mitchell between the governments and peoples of Ireland and the United Kingdom. This generous scholarship allows a student from the University of Maine system to study at University College Cork (UCC) in Ireland for one semester. The scholarship includes tuition and fees, housing in a residence hall, partial meal stipend, airfare stipend of $1000 and a textbook stipend of $200. Applications are now being accepted for scholarship awards for study during the 2015-2016 academic year. Applications are mailed to selection committee chair at UMaine and must be received by February 6, 2015.

UMF Community Orchestra with Mes Amis

A concert of waltzes, gypsy jazz, rags, and other toe-tapping delights, performed by the UMF Community Orchestra under the direction of Philip Carlsen. The featured guests are Mes Amis, a Djanogo Reinhardt-inspired combo led by UMF's guitar instructor Steve Lynnworth, with guitarist Harry Richter and violinist Steve Muise. The program includes Carlsen's arrangements of Brahms's 16 waltzes; several of Lynnworth's originals; including "Toby's Torment" and "Au revoir;" a couple of Joplin rags; the great Dvorak Serenade for winds, cellos, and basses and more.

Lecture by Dr. Steven Pane: Using Merleau-Ponty's ideas about art, memory, and history-a past which has never been present-this discussion assesses an intermedia performative project that took place in April 2014 where artists, writers, sound technologists, and others within a rural Maine community responded to a theme from the last piano sonata of Beethoven (Opus 111). The final event in the Lectures in the Arts and Humanities Series.
