At the University of Maine at Farmington, you can really be yourself. Or you can get a fresh new start and become whoever you want to be. And who you are is cool with us — all of us.
The University of Maine at Farmington is a safe, welcoming campus community that knows you’re not just like everyone else — and we admire you for it.
UMF started one of the first LGBTQ student organizations in northern New England. It also received a 4-Star Rating from Campus Pride, a national organization that recognizes colleges for taking steps to make their campuses safer and more inclusive.
The Campus Pride Index tool examines eight LGBTQ-friendly factors: LGBTQ policy inclusion, LGBTQ support & institutional commitment, LGBTQ academic life, LGBTQ student life, LGBTQ housing, LGBTQ campus safety, LGBTQ counseling & health, and LGBTQ recruitment and retention efforts.
At the University of Maine at Farmington, you’re among friends.
The University of Maine at Farmington, named a “Best College”by U.S.News & World Report for 16 consecutive years, is a close-knit, 1,900-student college campus where different ideas, values and lifestyles are welcomed.
UMF offers outstanding programs in arts & sciences, human services, business, environmental studies, teacher education, pre-law, pre-med, pre-MBA and more. You can even design your own major here (called an “Individualized” major). You see, at Farmington students are the center of the universe.
Because Farmington is a small school, you’ll work closely with professors who will know you by name and know you as a person. They’ll introduce you to cutting-edge concepts while giving you opportunities to gain valuable hands-on experience. Your professors will become trusted confidants and valued mentors.
Here, you’ll have internship opportunities in every major — allowing you to apply classroom theory to the real world. It’s learning by doing. Internships also help you make valuable professional contacts in your field while you build a highly competitive resume.
“At first I was a little unsure about going to a small collage tucked away in rural western Maine. Would I be accepted by the other college students? Would I be safe? How would I be treated by townspeople? Would I be able to find anything fun to do there? Well, my experience here as been absolutely fabulous. I’m treated well by students and locals and there is SO much to do — I just love this place. And I’ve made so many great friends here, too. I highly, highly recommend Farmington.”

The campus atmosphere here is incredibly supportive. Sure, the annual Drag Show is one of the biggest and most highly-anticipated campus events of the year. And it’s one of our best-attended events, by gays and straights alike.
UMF is not a jock school. We don’t even have a football team. Varsity softball — yes. Varsity soccer — of course. Field hockey, cross-country, skiing and snowboarding, lacrosse and more — certainly. We have great sports programs, just without with the jock school attitude.
Farmington is also known for being artsy, brainy, laid back, and outdoorsy. But a Big State U. with a jocks & frats culture? Not even close. We’re different.
Located in Maine’s Spectacular Lakes & Mountains Region
Farmington is ideally located in the spectacular lakes & mountains region of western Maine, an area famous for its hiking, skiing, snowboarding, camping and kayaking. We’re closer to more world class ski resorts than any other college in New England: Sugarloaf, Saddleback and Sunday River.
And we’re near the famous Appalachian Trail and the Maine Huts & Trails System. If you’re into the active outdoors lifestyle, this is the perfect place to go to college. Imagine taking a morning Shakespeare class and hitting a trail before lunchtime. You can actually do that here.
