Flu Vaccination Clinic
November 14th, 2012 - 11:00am
Influenza is a miserable respiratory illness that causes fever, body aches, sore throat and coughing. Most people or sick for a week or more. Flu can lead to serious complications like pneumonia in children, elderly or people with chronic illnesses like asthma. Please make getting vaccinated a priority if you have any health problems or if you will be working with children or elderly this semester or next. Flu germs spread easily on college campuses and getting vaccinated can protect yourself as well as the people you work with. Again this year, we have flu-mist, a nasal spray vaccine that can be used with healthy people up to age 49 if you prefer not getting a shot. We can bill most insurance for the vaccine so there is no cost to you but you must bring your insurance card when you get your vaccine. If you have no insurance coverage, the cost is $10 which you can pay for at the time (cash or check) or have it billed to your student account. In an effort to maximize the number of people we can immunize and be less disruptive to health care delivery in the Student Health Center, we are requesting that students and staff make every effort to come to one of the five clinics. Thursday Oct 11th from 8 -12 in the Lobby of Scott Hall-Health Center entrance; Wednesday Oct 17th from 11:00-1:00 in the Student Center, NDH-A; Friday Oct 26th from 11-1:00 in the Student Center, room 123; Tuesday Oct 30th from 11:00-1 in the Student Center, room 123; Wednesday Nov 14th from 11-1:00 in the Student Center, NDH-A. North Dining Hall A, UMF Olsen Student Center. UMF Community Only.

Mathematics Hour: Gale-Shapley Algorithm
November 14th, 2012 - 11:45am
In January of 1962 David Gale and Lloyd Shapley published a light hearted paper in the American Mathematical Monthly, ``{it College Admissions and the Stability of Marriage}''. They present an algorithm for envy free matching; establishing contracts in markets without prices. Since 1962 Dr. Gale has died and Alvin Roth has used the the algorithm to do matchings which have been beneficial to society. The Mathematics is deceptively simple but has had major impacts. So much impact that Alvin Roth and Lloyd Shapley have been awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economics for this work. Room 205, UMF Ricker Addition. Open to the public.

Teaching Commons: Leveling the Teaching Field: What Does Course Level Mean to You?
November 14th, 2012 - 11:45am
With John Messier & Marisela Funes-Jones How do 100, 200 & 300 level courses differ in your discipline? Differences might be in terms of student workload, complexity of material, student learning outcomes or just topics covered. In some disciplines the levels are a natural progression with prerequisites to reinforce the structure, while in other disciplines, there is no obvious difference between a 100 level course and a upper level course. North Dining Hall C, UMF Olsen Student Center. UMF Community Only.
