The Other Pirates of the Caribbean: Slave Trade and Transatlantic Textuality in 19th C. Louisiana
February 04, 2013 - 4:00pm
Presented by Dr. Clint Bruce from Bennington College. This presentation explores the antebellum short story "Un Pirate" by Michel Seligny, a French-educated free man of color from New Orleans. Specifically, it looks at how Seligny draws slyly on popular French literature, local pirate lore, and memories of the Haitian Revolution to denounce slavery, despite the harsh censorship laws of the time. Norh Dining Hall C, UMF Olsen Student Center. FREE. Open to the public. Sponsored by UMF Division of Humanities.
