Regardless of whether you have chosen a major at UMF or are undecided about your academic path, if you are a first-generation college student, you are highly encouraged to apply.

College is exciting and life-changing, but learning the way things work on campus can be an enormous challenge.

As a college student, you will be asked to think through difficult reading assignments, solve problems, and write well. The Johnson Scholars Program will help you develop these necessary skills while taking into consideration that each student brings to campus a different set of strengths and experiences.

Our role is to provide a welcoming space — your home base — where you can build the individualized advising relationships that will help you realize your goals.

From your first year through your graduation from UMF, Johnson Scholar staff and faculty are committed to helping map out your education and figure out what you need, both academically and personally, to achieve success.

Johnson Scholar Program Opportunities Include:

  • Academic Skills-Building and Personal Growth Workshops and Experiences
  • Mentoring Relationships (Peer and Professional)
  • Assistance in Understanding Financial Aid and Managing the Cost of College
  • Exploration in Majors and Careers for Undeclared Students
  • Travel to Regional and Local Cultural Events
  • Student Leadership
