
The purpose of the Honors peer mentor is to increase the academic, career, and social success of Honors students. This is achieved by creating a greater sense of community and involvement at UMF and in the Honors Program. Honors mentors build relationships with mentees by sharing their time and knowledge of resources, and inspire student engagement and community building through their peer relationships. This is also an opportunity for mentors to further develop relational skills, increase awareness of self and others, enhance leadership skills, and engage in positive, rewarding relationships.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities for our peer advisors
- Peer mentoring individually and in small groups
- Plan and attend Honors activities and classroom presentations
- Introduce mentees to student engagement opportunities & similar disciplines
- Encourage students to develop career plans when applicable
- Provide support for students who need scholarships: search, applications, and essays
- Orient students to UMF campus resources
- Respond in a timely fashion to inquiries from students
- Maintain a positive, helpful, collaborative relationship within the community
- Ability to maintain student and departmental confidentiality
- Promote a professional and student-centered work environment
- Attend mentor meetings and in-service trainings as required
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to professionally represent Honors Program to constituents when Honors staff are unavailable
- An enthusiastic, customer-friendly attitude; ability to lead when necessary and comfort taking initiative
- Punctuality, dependability, and excellent written and oral communication skills
- Working knowledge of MS Office suite and willingness to learn new skills
- Proficiency with general office tasks, including photocopying, scanning and using office-related social media
Additional Details
- Applicants must be an active member of the Honors Program with junior/senior standing
- Hours are flexible and range about 2-4 hours per week. We will work with you to create a schedule that fits with your classes and personal commitments
- Students will earn Honors Experience toward their recognition level
