Clara Jean is an Assistant Professor of Education in the Secondary and Elementary Education programs as well as the Graduate Certificate in English Language Learning. She has over twenty years experience in teaching and training for English learners’ academic success here in Maine and overseas at international schools in Japan and India. She recently completed her doctorate in educational leadership in which she focused on critical instruction for English learners from the perspectives of students themselves. Clara Jean is interested in how student voice can inform educators’ understanding of the challenges facing linguistically and culturally diverse students in developing the language and literacy necessary to achieve high academic standards. The focus of her work is on using a language acquisition perspective to design, implement and reflect on curriculum, instruction and assessment in the context of state and federal policies in K-12 schooling. In her free time, Clara Jean enjoys nothing more than recreation and international travel with her family and friends.
