Mission Statement
The Spenciner Curriculum Materials Center provides materials and educational experiences for pre-service teachers at UMF to enrich their teaching of children and youth, birth through age 20, supports the professional development and pedagogy of practicing teachers in western Maine, and is available to education and special education professionals in the community, individuals with disabilities, and their families.
The goals of the Center are:
- To provide a stimulating environment for patrons to explore and evaluate educational materials appropriate for children and youth, birth through age 20.
- To provide opportunities for patrons to “field test” materials.
- To provide assistance to users in identifying, locating, and using educational materials and technologies
- To familiarize patrons with the genres and formats, as well as authors and illustrators, of contemporary literature for children.
- To provide literacy materials appropriate for small group and whole class literacy instruction and subject integration.
- To provide STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) materials appropriate for small group and whole class instruction and subject integration.
- To provide assistance to users in identifying, locating, and using assistive technology devices. Patrons can learn how to:
- Consider a child’s needs for assistive technology.
- Adapt content, methodology, or delivery of instruction to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability, birth through age 20.
- Ensure that a child has access to the general curriculum so that the child can meet the educational standards that apply to all children.
- To maintain the Center’s collection and manage the local circulation of the Center’s materials to UMF students, faculty, and area teachers.
